From the Archive: More Cheeseburgers!

by Lesley Drayton, Curator of the Local History Archive

I’m sure all of you went out and grabbed a burger and fries for National Cheeseburger Day that took place on Friday, September 18. If not, be sure to write it in your calendar for next year! To get you in the mood for a burger bash, check out some of the restaurants that used to tempt the fast-food palates of Fort Collins citizens in the past.

“We grind our own beef” at Morrie’s In & Out Drive-In Beefburgers, located at 1611 South College, circa 1955.

The Original Hamburger Stand Restaurant, 616 South College in 1995. Thirty-five cents a burger= quite a deal!

Kentucky Fried Chicken, 1817 South College, 1968.

Eye-spy Challenge! Can you find the McDonald’s Restaurant in this 1968 view of 2501 South College?

I’ve known Kutchie Pelaez since he was a kid. We used to Play Asheville back in the good old days. We stayed in the hotel next to his dad’s store. We always got him into the shows we did. For a white kid he always had a lot of soul. It didn’t surprise me a bit when I found out that he had opened a restaurant in the 70’s, he was a natural.
Kutchie is now known for serving the world’s Greatest Cheese Burgers and he makes the world’s Greatest Key Lime Pie. What most folks don’t know is that Kutchie also makes the best prime ribs I have ever had.
We have tried to get Kutchie to open a restaurant here in the windy city but he says that if he goes any further north his nose bleeds. I don’t know about that but Kutchie is still “The Man”.
Go check-out Kutchie’s and tell him you were sent by me.
    The ICEMAN….

Has anyone here ever heard about Kutchie and Anita Pelaez’s Famous Key Lime Pie Factory? We keep hearing so much good stuff about the couple and they’re key lime pies.
