From the Archive: A sporting donation

by Lesley Drayton, Curator, Fort Collins Local History Archive

Check out this great donation we recently received at the Museum! These two large scrapbooks were created by local artist and sign painter Harold Asmus for the Dingler Sporting Goods store, once located at 140 North College in Fort Collins. The scrapbooks are from 1953 and 1954, and won second and first prize (respectively) in a national competition for Brand Name Retailer of the Year. They’re chock full of clippings and articles detailing the many items Dingler carried in the store, and feature marvelous examples of retail display in the 1950s.

Dingler Store exterior--note the fantastic neon fisherman sign! Whatever happened to that?

My favorite section of the 1954 scrapbook highlights Dingler’s Trout Rodeo, a 10-week fishing contest sponsored by the store; entries were displayed in an Amana freezer, courtesy of the Frozen Food Center. Prizes were doled out weekly, with first place winners earning $10.00 towards merchandise!
