From the Archive: University Plaza Mall

Here’s another little treat from the Larimer County Panorama tourist booklet (also featured in last week’s post) that features a growing phenomenon in the mid-1960s: indoor malls! University Plaza was located at 2229 South College Avenue in Fort Collins, and had an array of new destinations for Fort Collins shoppers.

All this and air conditioning too!

I like the hanging ivy.

Montgomery Ward was one of the anchors.

You could get some banking done at the mall as well.

Does anyone know when this mall closed? Bonus points if you can tell me what is there today!

My recollection is that Montgomery Ward moved out about 1995, but that’s just a guess.

Meijer stores now at that location include Whole Foods, Wilbur’s, OfficeMax, and King Soopers.

    So that’s where that is!

The mall languished for many years until Whole Foods moved in and it became a destination in the Fort once again. Montgomery Ward opened first, then the rest of the mall was built. Great!

Nice job, everyone! I checked the city directories, and it looks like Montgomery Ward disappeared in or around 1997. You’re all right–Whole Foods is now the anchor at this location, along with many other stand-alone stores.

Even though it wasn’t accessible from the indoor part of the mall, I would consider King Soopers still an anchor.

Just as a reminisce: in the last decade before the “indoor” went away, I recall a Walgreen’s, a lounge-chair store (south end, don’t recall the name), a kid’s playroom, and I took my driving test at the CO licensing bureau there, about where PetCo has a loading back around back. And of course, Montgomery Wards.

(BTW, the Dept of Revenue driver’s license office in Fort Collins has moved 3 times since then – 1984. Can anyone id those locations?)

Does anyone remember the large turtle and dinosaur statues that used to be in the University Mall? Someone must have loved them as much as I do because a house over on Vassar in Fort Collins has one displayed proudly in the front yard!

When it left University Mall, the driver’s license office moved to the small strip mall where Sportscasters bar is now, just off JFK pkwy. From there it moved to the bank building just NE of foothills mall. Then it moved to the strip mall location it is at now on prospect and shields

Hi Amber. I don’t recall the near-Sportscasters location, but I do recall, that between the Univ. Mall and near-Foothalls locations, it was also briefly in the strip-mall on the SE corner of Prospect & Lemay (try this address in Google Maps: 1624 S Lemay Ave # 9, Fort Collins). And golly-gee, now it’s just been moved again, to the NE corner of College & Swallow. I guess that building constructed specifically for them near Prospect & Shields got too big.

Just curious, what brought you to this particular article on the museum blog?
